THE PROJECT

Light Transports are journeys within a journey, a read to get you from A to B via somewhere else.

We commissioned and sourced journey length stories lasting either a couple of stops - reads of around ten minutes, a commute – reads of around twenty minutes, or intercity – thirty to forty minutes. Stories for people who read books, stories for people who read when something is there, whether that’s the Metro or a sauce bottle. Stories for people who like surprises.

During October 2006 the stories were distributed in free books to rail travellers on York, Hull, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and Ilkley Stations, and sets of the books were given to all library authorities in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

You can buy your set of all three books here at route online

Yorkshire has a rich literature, and some of our best writers are working here right now, Light Transports brought them to a wider public. We also couldn't resist reminding people of two of the region's finest writers from the last century.

The writing and reading ecology in Yorkshire is not just about the writers who live here - so we commissioned writers who visit to work with us and included work published by the exciting presses in the region for a mix of locally grown locally sourced quality.
